We went to Sitiawan on the last Saturday 25 February 2017
Sitiawan is a region in Manjung District, located at Perak, Malaysia. It is a large Foochow dominated town in Perak. They call themselves "Hock Chiew Neng" constituted the majority of the Sitiawan population.
It was a 3 hour drive to Sitiawan from Kuala Lumpur via North-South Express way. We departed from Berjaya Time Square at 8am and arrived Sitiawan around 11am.
Let the FOOD TRIP begin!
The first place we went to was Restoran Liu Xiao Fu to eat Dim Sum. The shop is named after the owner six sons. We tried several plates of Dim Sum
Lo mai gai, siu mai, har gao, wu gok, sesame ball, fu chuk roll and peanut & kaya bun |
The wu gok (fried yam dumpling) was very different from the ones we usually tried in Kuala Lumpur. The original fried yam dumpling in Kuala Lumpur we normally eat is an external crispy net coated with the soft mashed yam batter enclosing the mixed pork and mushroom filling. However, the texture of the fried yam dumpling we ate in Sitiawan was not crispy but was soggy. It was not fried but baked. Besides, the "pillow bun" was their specialties. But the texture of the bun was dry. Overall the dim sum tasted good.
According to the aunty we met in Restaurant Liu Xiao Fu, she recommended us to try out the Loh Mee and "Loh Lak" noodle at Pasar Awam Kampung Koh. "Loh Lak" noodle is a combination of Loh Mee and Asam Laksa.
We drove by the area few times but we still did not manage to find the stall.

So, we went to Restaurant Seng Jee Chan to try the FooChow Ang Jiu Mee Suah (Red Glutinous Wine with Longevity Noodle). The red glutinous wine and longevity noodle was made in the shop itself, beside the restaurant.

Red Glutinous Wine with Longevity Noodle |
The consistency of the pumpkin and sesame sweet soup was very thick while the white fungus with pumpkin sweet soup was similar to the ones we usually eat in Kuala Lumpur.
It was served together with choices of chicken, pork ribs, and 3-layer pork. The noodle was served separately so that customer have the option to mix it together with the red glutinous wine soup. The taste of the soup was unique and very flavorful. The soup consist of ginger slices, sesame oil, red glutinous wine, light soy sauce, and Shaoxing wine.

Because we were feeling full, we decided to go Tua Pek Kong Temple nearby. It is one of the largest and famous Chinese temple in Sitiawan. It is thought to be over 100 years but has undergone rapid changes in recent year, with the addition of more statue, a dragon tunnel, surrounding wall, and a pagoda.

Cheong Cia Gong Pian
The most famous and well-known food in Sitiawan was Foochow Gong Pian (Foochow Biscuit)!
It was made with wheat flour, yeast, salt, and lard, filled with minced onion and a tinge of lard. The savory Gong Pian was crispy and very aromatic. The Gong Pian were placed on the wall of the hot clay oven to bake. It was the traditional method of cooking which make it to be special and tasty.

Restaurant Yee Si
Almost finish! đ |
Restaurant Yee Si is famous for their "pillow bun" which is the peanut layer pau. The pau started selling from 3pm onwards. We arrived there around 3:40pm but unfortunately, it was SOLD OUT! We were informed by the seller that it was reserved for other customers. So, we only manage to get the normal peanut bun. It taste like Glutinous Rice Peanut ball (糯繳çł) but in a pau version.

After the disappointment, we went to Lumut to buy some anchovies.
There were types of anchovies available and Lumut is famous for their anchovies. Then, we went to Lumut Penghasil Borong to buy some local produces. Kampung Koh's Chili Sauce was found here.
Restaurant Ah Pek Lee Kou Hock
After that, we went to this restaurant which was situated at Kampung Cina. It was a little bit scary on the way to this restaurant because the road was very narrow and eerie. We used Waze and Google to locate the place but we came to a new residential area. We were terrified because there were only contractors over there. We stopped our car outside the new residential area and tried to Waze and Google the place again but there was no signal in that area. *we really felt that we were in our own scary movie đđ
When we decided to leave and look for another restaurant, we found RESTAURANT AH PEK LEE! đ° It was only located a few meters in front of us on the right.
Fried Squid |
Clams served in Cucumber Soup |
Fried Oyster Omelette |
Kangkung Belacan |
We ordered fried squid, clams served in cucumber soup, fried oyster omelette, and kangkung belacan for our dinner. The clams soup was their specialty which was served with cucumber. It was our first time trying clams cooked in this way. Overall, it was the BEST restaurant that we went through that day. Highly recommend to try out their seafood in here. The price was also reasonable.

Overall, we had a good time food hunting in Sitiawan. If we could stay longer, it would be better for us to hunt for more food. Lastly, we would recommend our friends and family to pay a visit to Sitiawan for the good food.
After the dinner, we then drove back to Kuala Lumpur. We arrived Berjaya Times Square around 9pm.
This sum up our Sitiawan trip.
Thank you everyone for stopping by! đ
